Notebook, [ca. 1835-1840].

Notebook kept by Edmonds on fellow artists' techniques (ca. 1835-1840). He gives detailed and illustrated analysis of the work of Thomas Sully, Gilbert Stuart, Sir Henry Raeburn, Raphael Hoyle, and William Page. Illustrations are mostly pen-and-ink but include a small watercolor of himself to illustrate Page's portrait technique learned wile Edmonds sat for him.

Artist Thomas Sully was born in London, although his actor parents soon emigrated to the United States. A trip back to England to study painting expanded his horizons, and upon his return to the United States he developed a reputation as a first rate painter.
